REVIEW OF THE KINGS & QUEENS OF IRISH COUNTRY MUSIC AT THEATRE AT THE MILL, NEWTOWNABBEY, 22nd APRIL 2015. The years were rolled back last night in the Theatre At The Mill, Newtownabbey when five Kings and Queens of Irish Country Music came to town. This was an absolutely superb night of great traditional country music. Ray Lynam, all the way from Co. Westmeath was first on stage taking us back to the good old days with great numbers such as The Door Is Always Open and Brand New Mister Me but it was his rendition of the great George Jones classic, He Stopped Loving Her Today, that really had the audience enthralled. This guy just keeps on going and the voice is still as good as ever. John Hogan has been referred to as “The Prince of Irish Country Music” so it was befitting that he was part of this great Kings & Queens show. He started with a lively medley including Loves Gonna Live Here and If I Could Only Start Over and followed up with classics such as Old Cottage Waiting In The Country and Be Nobody’s Darling But Mine. A truly regal performance from the Prince. Our first Queen of Country on the night was Louise Morrisey. This lady has one of the best voices on this island, what more can I say. She started with, Music In My Heart a title track from one of her CD’s and followed with a lovely medley including, I Fall To Pieces. Two beautiful numbers followed, September Sky and Come Back Paddy Reilly and she finished on a gospel theme with How Great Thou Art. A superb performance from a fantastic singer. She should be representing Ireland in the Eurovision. After the break we had an imprompto performance from Fermanagh man, Billy Mac and he didn’t disappoint. Just a cople of songs from Billy, Don’t Close Your Eyes and Bandy The Rodoe Clown both sung magnificently. Next it was the turn of our own Irish dynamo, Gloria, to get the audience clapping their hands. With a figure to die for and looking resplendent in an all black outfit bejewelled with sparklers she belted out the Tammy Wynette classic, Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad. But it was her 1976 hit, One Day At A Time, the audience wanted to hear and she deliverd it in wonderful style. Other great numbers included “My Boy Lollie Pop” and a duet with James McGarrity singing The Gambler - all wonderful stuff from this dynamic Queen of country. The headline act of the night was our own true gentleman of country music in these parts, Brian Coll. Starting with, It Takes Peolpe Like You, he had the audience in the palm of his hand right away. It’s not just Brian’s singing that we all love but also the way he engages with his audience. Between songs he reminisces about his 50 plus years in show business with humourous stories of meeting American legends and travelling all over Ireland and the USA. Jim Reeves once told him he was blessed with a great voice and truer words were never spoken. We had a wonderful rendition of songs from Brian including, I Love You Because and The Roads of Kildare. He finished with Dear Hearts And Gentle People a song obviously close to his heart. Fantastic performance. Brian is embarking on his “Farewell Tour” (we hope not) on 30th April at the Strurle Arts Centre, Omagh. More details can be had by clicking the link below. Congratulations to JMG Music Group for a fantastic show. Finally, a wonderful and diverse performance by the band including Rod & Eamon from The Barroom Buddies and of course James McGarrity who brings it all together
